Summit Hill Junior High Library Vision / Mission Statement Our Vision: The Summit Hill Junior High Library will meet students, teachers and curriculum needs by providing open and equitable access to knowledge in every medium for the promotion of learning and discovery in a caring and supportive environment in order to foster life-long learning and productive citizenship. Summit Hill Junior High Library Collection Policy The collection development policy of Summit Hill Junior High reflects the needs of our 700, 7th and 8th grade student body and the 200 professional educators who serve them. I. The library collections goal is to support the curriculum of Summit Hill School District 161. In developing the school library collection, both physically and virtually, Summit Hill Junior High Library staff is working to help encourage student’s full potential and encourage life-long learning. II. Guidelines for the selection of material. In addition to the guidelines below, reviews from the sources listed under Selection Tools within these documents will be utilized to ensure that the collection is as timely and comprehensive as possible. A. The material fulfills a need within the curriculum. B. The material is requested by an educator in order to support learning in the classroom. C. The material provides access to information that will engage students intellectually and stimulate intellectual curiosity. D. The material meets the needs or interests of the student body. E. The material is timely and not outdated or easily outdated. F. The material supports a point of view that is not already expressed through the collection. G. The material fulfills an area within the collection that is not adequate. H. The material is Caudill, Newberry, Lincoln or other award-winning literary work. I. The material encourages a love of reading. III. Selection Tools Materials will be vigorously vetted to ensure a standard of care that enriches the educational and reading experience of Summit Hill Junior High students. The following resources will be utilized in the selection of materials in the collection: A. Collection development online and physical resources created specifically for selecting print, audio, video and ebook materials such as School Library Journal, Horn Book and Booklist. B. Online resources that provide information about upcoming titles such as Follett Titlewave, Epic Reads and various publisher’s websites. C. Request put forth by faculty and students that are vetted for inclusion based on the validity, interest level and appropriateness of the materials. IV. Weeding will be completed on a revolving bi-yearly basis alternating with the fiction and non-fiction collection. A. Using the MUSTY criteria for weeding, books will be weeded according to the following standards. 1. M – Misleading materials 2. U – Ugly or worn beyond repair 3. S – Superseded by other information within the collection 4. T – Trivial due to inaccuracies, reading level or desire by users 5. Y - Your collection has no need for the work B. Once de-selected by library staff or aids, the materials will be made available to the individual teacher’s classroom library collections or to students with an interest in the materials. C. Any materials not selected by the teaching staff will be properly disposed of by removing all library identifying labels and sent to a reseller, charitable organization or recycler. V. A Curriculum Mapping Survey will be conducted every five years in order to revisit this policy and to ensure the health and adequacy of the collection. Information on the survey will be presented to the Summit Hill District 161 School Board before the end of the first quarter of the following school year. VI. Special Requests Special requests for materials may be made at any time during the regular school year by parents, students and faculty. These requests are subject to the above stipulations with regard to collection development, however, accommodations will be made whenever possible. Requests should be submitted to the library staff at [email protected] VII. Challenges to Materials Any Stakeholder may challenge the materials in the Summit Hill Junior High School Library through the following means: A. Reading, listening to or viewing the materials in their entirety. B. Filling out the following form including all contact information, the nature of the challenge and the inclusion of the portions of the material that is in question. C. Within 7 days, a meeting with library staff, administrators and the inquiring party will schedule an in-person meeting to discuss the inclusion of the materials. Administrators from multiple schools will be included if the work is found in multiple buildings. D. The Summit Hill 161 Administrators decision is considered final and closure on the matter. E. Materials cannot be challenged within 5 years of the most recent challenge. Please be aware that the Summit Hill Junior High librarian adheres to the criteria for collection challenges that are put forth by the American Library Association and the American Association of School Librarians.
