Listen to an excerpt from a 2021 Caudill Nominee? Can you guess who is reading?
Hi ALL! This is the first entry in a series of posts highlighting the 2021 Caudill Nominees!
This week we are featuring a story about a refugee hidden away, a young girl trying to understand the racial divide, a basketball legend on his way to being the GOAT, a ghostly tale and 12 days and a bus ride that changed the world forever. "12 Days in May" is the true events of the 13 Freedom Riders who travelled by bus through the heart of the deep south to expose the segregation and brutal truths of inequality in 1961. The farther south they travelled the more harrowing their story becomes. This book takes the opportunity to highlight how far we have come and how far we still have to go. Excellent nonfiction by Larry Dane Brimner. Haven't gotten your fill of scary stories since Halloween? Well, look no further than Ellen Oh's first in a series, "Spirit Hunters". When Harper's little brother Michael is obviously being haunted by spirits, she begins chasing down clues from her past to help free him from their power. Why does the new house remind her of something from the past? What is this sense of deja vu she keeps experiencing? Will Harper discover the answers before it is too late for Michael? Read "Spirit Hunters" by Ellen Oh and find out! Technically, Lucy Callahan is ready for college. Mathematically speaking that is. In "The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl", being struck by lightning isn't all it is cracked up to be. Homeschooled since the strike that left her a mathematical genius, in her first year of middle school, she is learning there is more to school than learning what is in the textbook. Follow Lucy as she learns to navigate friendship, gives back to her community and works on accepting herself for who she is: Lightning Girl. Ok... if you wanted "The Last Dance" over the summer, have I got a book for you! Sports fans and nonsports fans will love "Becoming Kareem". A little bit basketball, a little bit coming of age, a little bit finding your place in the world, this book has a big message. Coming up in the 1960's, Kareem Abdul Jabaar went from high school player to college phenom to the GOAT. Read his autobiographical story and learn about what it takes to play with heart and overcome obstacles while staying true to yourself! A great read for anyone! "A Good Kind of Trouble" is what civil rights legend John Lewis called protesting to protect ones civil rights. Shay hasn't really thought too much about it until a black man is shot and killed by a white police officer in her community. Suddenly there are protests and calls of Black Lives Matter, and Shay is suddenly questioning who her real friends are. When tensions start to rise, Shay decides to take a stand, but will she be forced to stand alone? This is a timely story about what it means to be black in America today from the eyes of a middle school student. Imagine taking a harrowing journey across the sea from war torn Syria to the endless suffering of a Greek refugee camp and finally making your way to Belgium with nowhere to go and no one to help. That is Ahmed's story. He is just a "Nowhere Boy". Trapped in a basement day and night while the family above goes about their daily lives, is a lonely way to live. Until the day he is discovered by Max and both boys learn they have more in common than they thought. If there is anyway to help Ahmed, Max is going to find it.
